Blind Mice Mart's Movie Vault
www.blindmicemart.com

Are you tired of asking your friends to describe scenes when you get together to watch a movie? Do you want more DVS (Descriptive Video Services)? Check out Blind Mice Mart's movie vault for thousands of recorded DVS movies in mp3 format! There is a wide variety of movies, from black-and-white oldies to modern favourites like Lord of the Rings and the Harry Potter series (six of seven). Best of all, the movies are free. The only downside is for people with some usuable vision; because the movies are in MP3 format, they are audio only. Therefore, there is no visual. This has not been a problem for me (I'm unable to see what's on the screen anyway), my friend who has some residual vision (he has 20/200 vision), or my sighted friends who "watch" these movies with me. Because it has DVS, which describes all the important visual actions (such as someone gesturing instead of speaking), seeing the movie is not necessary for enjoyment. In fact, a few of my sighted friends have told me that they prefer these DVS movies because it lets them use their imagination more. I think of them as half way between an audio book and actually being there.

Go to the Blind Mice Mart website at www.blindmicemart.com, go down to the heading that says “Blind Mice Movie Vault,” click on that, and you'll go to the movie vault page in a seperate window. It is seperated into headings that are easily navigated by screenreader users. The actual download part takes a little getting used to, though, because of all the advertisements in the download page.

On the Movie Vault page, the next from last Heading gives basic instructions for downloading. I do one thing different, and that is that when I get to the Sendspace popup window after pressing “Regular Download,” I press the N key (for non-link text) until I hear “Note” and arrow up. There is a blank line, then a graphic, another blank line, and the next line is the download link. I find this faster than tabbing up from the bottom.

Another Note: Some of the movies are categorized differently. For example, while Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian is under the C Heading, Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is under the T heading (for The). So, if you don’t find the movie you are looking for at first, try it under alternate alphabet headings. So, you might look under the S heading for “The Sixth Sense,” but it’s under the T heading for “The,” and while some of the Agatha Christi movies are under A for “Agatha,” some are under the actual name of the movie (for example, the Number heading for “13 for Dinner”)

If you have any trouble with the DVS movie vault, let me know, and I’ll see if I can help! Enjoy your movies and being able to talk to your friends about the movies you watched and could actually understand.

Look for future posts in this blog about:
The National Library Services’ DVS services
Movie Theatres that have DVS
Organizations’ work toward access to DVS for theatres, DVDs, and television programs

When these posts are added, I will make the above into links.

Hi Jewel, my name is Michael, I live in Johannesburg, South Africa. I am 42 and went blind as a teenager from Retinitis Pigmentosa. I work for the Endangered Wildlife Trust in Johannesburg, I am the Director of Operations and Governance for the Trust. I am really struck by your passion for education and recreation for blind people - there is not nearly enough of that. It is all the more special because you went blind relatively recently. You are going to be a fantastic teacher and I wish you all the strength in the world in pursueing that dream. I was a blind student and graduated as a lawyer from the University of Cape Town in 1996 - it was tough, but worth every second. All the very best. Michael.

Dear Michael,
Thank you so much for your comment. I love hearing from people from all over. Your job with the Endangered Wildlife Fun sounds really cool. I hope you'll come back for my other posts, of which I hope to post at least one a week, on Wednesday (or late Tuesday, if I can't wait, as happened with the last post).

Enjoy the blog, and feel free to share more about yourself, too!

Dear Jewel,

I'm Vincent, I'm 18 years old, I'm blind and I'm from Belgium.

First of all, thanks for this AMAZING blog. The problem is, the blind mice mart movie vault is closed. I've sent some e-mails to the Mice and they've been saying that they'll be back up soon for a very long time now, and I'm a bit sick of checking that site every day to see whether or not www.blindmicemegamall.com - the new url - works. So I hope you'll be able to give me some advice or help.

I'm desperately looking for the first three Harry Potter movies (the audio described version). Do you know if they were ever downloadable in the movie vault, or do you own the MP3 files yourself? If you do, would you PLEASE be so kind as to post them on a site like the pirate bay? If you want to ask me anything, feel free to send me an e-mail: vincent-fernandes@hotmail.com

When you explore the mice Mice Mart, all it says is that they changed their format. I tried searching for the vault, but cnanot seem to find it. Any help?

Jewel;
Do you know if these dvs programs are still around? I can't seem to find them, and teach Assistive Technology in the state of Alaska. I know several clients, including my self would really like access to dvs videos, as our library doesn't offer them. Please let me know what information you have.
thanks
Michael

I don't drop many comments, but after looking at through some of the responses here Untitled. I actually do have 2 questions for you if you tend not to mind. Is it only me or do some of the responses come across like they are coming from brain dead visitors? :-P And, if you are writing on additional places, I would like to follow you. Would you make a list of all of all your social networking sites like your linkedin profile, Facebook page or twitter feed?

Have you ever considered about including
a little bit more than just your articles?
I mean, what you say is important and everything.
Nevertheless think about if you added some great visuals or video clips to give your posts more, "pop"!
Your content is excellent but with pics and video
clips, this blog could certainly be one of the very best in its
field. Wonderful blog!

Good day! I know this is somewhat off topic but I was wondering which blog platform are you using for this site?

I'm getting tired of Wordpress because I've had problems with hackers and
I'm looking at options for another platform. I would be fantastic if you could point me in the direction of a good platform.

I know it's been awhile since people asked, but I am just learning how to moderate and respond to comments. First, the new website for the Blind Mice Movice Vault is Blind Mice Mega Mall . You have to make an account, but it's free. Then, click on the movie vault and you'll have a great deal of options for viewing movies and downloading. Unlike before, they now include synopsises of the movie's story, along with other information such as starring cast. You can also search for a particular movie, or browse by letter as before. Enjoy!

Second, I will be starting a page on Facebook for my blog soon, so look for that soon. It'll be a great way for everyone to contact me, especially with the Facebook Pages Manager app on my iPhone. Until then, my e-mail address can be found on the main page under "Can't Find Something?" I'll post about the new page as soon as it's up.

Third, I'm currently looking for a good way to add audio podcasts to my blog, such as demonstrations of how a program works on the computer or on a smartphone or interviews with organization leaders. If anyone has suggestions for software that can help me do this, please contact me at herekittykat2 @ gmail.com, or leave a comment. I don't want to do videos, since I can't be sure of video quality (I'm functionally totally blind myself), but would love to add audio. I'm also looking to learn how to take pictures of my computer screen to post. I know how to do it on the iPhone (for anyone who doesn't, press the home button and power button at the same time, and it'll capture an image of your current screen), so I can take pictures of apps that way, but life isn't just about IOS apps, is it?
